Can you advertise alongside a French motorway?

No, not directly. Article L.581-7 of the French Environment Code sets a simple rule: outside built-up areas, all outdoor advertising is banned. Since French motorways run outside built-up areas along almost their entire length, no advertising structure can be installed beside them.

Three further rules close the obvious loopholes:

  • Advertising visible from a motorway or expressway is banned within 200 metres of either carriageway.
  • Even inside a built-up area, a ground-mounted structure is banned if its posters can be seen from a motorway or a slip road.
  • Only structures visible exclusively from the motorway are caught by the rule. A billboard that can also be seen from another public road stays legal, which is why you still spot a few from certain urban stretches.

The exemptions in French law cover airport and railway station land, plus some out-of-town retail parks governed by a local advertising bylaw. None of them applies to the motorway network itself.

This matters if you are used to the UK or US market, where motorway and highway billboards are a standard part of the media mix. In France they are not an option, and no amount of budget changes that. What remains is one medium that travels inside the car.

Radio 107.7, the motorway medium

Since 1991, the 107.7 FM frequency has been reserved in France for traffic information. It is broadcast by around a thousand low-power transmitters placed every 7 to 10 kilometres along the motorway network. You cannot pick it up anywhere else, which makes it the only genuinely motorway-specific medium in the country.

Six stations share the frequency, each on its own concession network. The largest, Radio VINCI Autoroutes, covers 4,524 km (about 2,810 miles), reaching 9 of France's 10 biggest cities and 85% of coastal destinations. Its audience runs from 1.7 to 4.7 million people a day depending on the season, and 52% are in the top socio-economic brackets (Ipsos, 2023-2025).

Listening is deliberate and attentive. Drivers switch it on for one reason: the traffic bulletin broadcast every fifteen minutes. Very few media get that kind of intentional tune-in.

Airtime is sold by geographic network, starting at €1,800 excluding VAT for a five-day campaign. Full network breakdown, formats and rates on our dedicated page: advertising on Radio VINCI Autoroutes 107.7.

What about billboards on approach roads?

With the motorway itself closed off, outdoor advertising moves upstream and downstream: onto arterial roads, urban ring roads, and the retail zones that cluster around motorway exits. Drivers there are already in decision mode, often minutes from where they are heading.

These sites fall under ordinary French outdoor advertising law and remain open to standard formats, from 8 m² panels up to large format. They work on catchment coverage rather than corridor coverage, so plan them city by city rather than road by road.

Service areas

A third option, less well known outside France: motorway service and rest areas host advertising panels, brand activations and product sampling. The average stop lasts around forty minutes, which is long enough for real contact rather than a glance.

These are not sold through the same channel as radio. Each motorway concession manages its own service areas under its own rules. Get in touch and we will point you to the right contact.

Who advertises on French motorways

  • Tourism and leisure: theme parks, campsites, hotels and visitor attractions near an exit. The message lands while the decision is still being made.
  • Food service and retail along the route, for the shortest drive-to-store distance there is.
  • Automotive and related services: dealerships, tyres, breakdown cover, insurance. The audience is entirely made up of drivers.
  • National FMCG brands running seasonal campaigns around summer holidays and spring bank holidays.
  • Regional authorities and tourist boards, on destination marketing, events and road safety.

Planning a French motorway campaign

  1. Define your routes first. A regional advertiser buys one network, a national campaign combines several. The station follows from the roads, not the other way round.
  2. Get the timing right. French motorway traffic is heavily concentrated: July and August on coastal routes, the May bank holidays, and the changeover weekends. The same budget buys very different reach depending on the week.
  3. Write for driving. One message, one concrete landmark ("exit 23"), twenty seconds. Your listener cannot write anything down or tap a link.
  4. Request a quote through the Adintime platform. Free service, response from the sales house within 24 hours, campaign report at the end.

Frequently asked questions

Can you put up a billboard along a French motorway?

No. Article L.581-7 of the French Environment Code bans all outdoor advertising outside built-up areas, and the rules specifically prohibit structures within 200 metres of either motorway carriageway. A billboard sited inside a built-up area is also banned if it can only be seen from the motorway.

What advertising channels are available on French motorways?

Radio 107.7, which reaches drivers inside the car along the whole network. Advertising and activations in service areas, sold separately by each motorway concession. And billboards on approach roads within built-up areas, before or after the exits.

How much does motorway advertising cost in France?

A five-day radio campaign on one network starts at €1,800 excluding VAT for 30 spots, which works out at roughly €1.20 per thousand contacts. Buying all four networks costs €8,925 excluding VAT after the volume discount, for 9.2 million weekly contacts.

How much traffic do French motorways carry?

101 billion kilometres, or roughly 63 billion miles, were travelled on the tolled network in 2024. The network covers 9,328 km (about 5,800 miles), averaging 30,400 vehicles per day on each section (source: ASFA, key figures 2025).

Why do I still see billboards from French motorways?

Because only structures visible exclusively from a motorway are banned. A billboard that can also be seen from another public road remains legal, which mostly applies to urban stretches and retail zones around exits.

Is 107.7 the same station everywhere in France?

No. Six separate stations share the frequency, each on its own network: Radio VINCI Autoroutes, Sanef 107.7, Autoroute Info, Autoroute de Gascogne FM, Radio Atlandes Autoroute and Normandie Trafic. The programming is completely different from one to the next, and each has its own advertising sales house.

Can an overseas advertiser buy French motorway radio?

Yes. Adintime handles the booking, the relationship with the sales house and the campaign report. You supply the audio, or we can help you get it produced in French.
